Living in Bochum

Bochum is a city with around 370,000 inhabitants, including more than 55,000 students from the seven of the city’s universities. Its international flair means that pretty much everyone speaks English! Situated in the middle of the Ruhr area, the largest urban agglomeration in Europe, it is a mid-sized city in German terms, which offers a lot of advantages for international students. Located near the geographical centre of Europe, fascinating metropoles such as Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris are a mere train-ride away. Bochum has an excellent railway, airplane and autobahn connection to all destinations in Germany and Central Europe. Where once coal mining dominated, the services and education sector have long since taken over. This also means that the city has many urban forests and green zones, as well as a large lake that offer recreational resources for boating, climbing, hiking, cycling and all kinds of outdoor activities. Modern Bochum is a friendly, open-minded and green place, with a high degree of cultural diversity. We offer many opportunities for sports, recreational activities, cultural events and international happenings. For soccer fans, top Bundesliga clubs such as Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 have their home bases in the neighbourhood.

The city centre has a wonderful open air restaurant district known as the Bermuda Dreieck. The high student population in a relatively small city means that in the evenings this district is always abuzz with young people socialising. The cuisine reflects the multinational and multicultural community that resides in Bochum. Here you can find some blogs from Erasmus exchange students who came to Bochum for their studies.

There are many good reasons to choose RUB for study and research, such as excellent research and interdisciplinary learning, the services of the international office and research school, affordable accommodation, a low cost of living, no tuition fees and a long-established international community that gladly welcomes new faces.
