Biomedical Engineering Lab

The Biomedical Engineering Lab at Ruhr University Bochum combines engineering methods with medical and biological findings to develop innovative solutions for tomorrow's healthcare. As part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the lab stands for interdisciplinary research at the interface between technology and medicine.

Biomedical engineering is one of the most dynamic fields of application in engineering today. The close collaboration between a wide range of disciplines opens up opportunities to create technical solutions that are not only highly functional but also tailored to the individual human needs. The Biomedical Engineering Lab focuses on developing safe, efficient, and flexible technologies that improve the patients’ quality of life in the long term. Particular attention is paid to biomechanical and biomechatronic systems, which are characterized by the reciprocal interaction between humans and technology.

Current research focuses on new approaches to support the musculoskeletal system, particularly in the areas of neurological rehabilitation, orthotics, prosthetics, and implant technology. This includes innovative systems for hand and gait rehabilitation, intelligent orthoses for spine relieve and stabilization, and novel prostheses and implants that lead to better treatment outcomes. At the same time, the lab is dedicated to the entire care process, from initial contact to long-term and follow-up care. The goal is to increase the effectiveness of care through greater individualization and to create economically sustainable structures through digitalization. AI methods and numerical simulations play a central role in this. In close cooperation with clinical and industrial partners, the team combines a broad range of methodological expertise – from theoretical basic research to the development of practical solutions that find their way into everyday use.
