Professor Eva Weber-Guskar
Eva Weber-Guskar was awarded a Heisenberg professorship in 2019. She researches into living in time and the ethics of artificial intelligence.
Eva Weber-Guskar studied philosophy, comparative literature and political science in Munich, Paris and Berlin, where she obtained her PhD degree in 2007. From 2008 to 2010, Eva Weber-Guskar was research associate at the Institute of Practical Philosophy at Georg August University in Göttingen. Thanks to a research grant by the German Research Foundation, she had the opportunity to spend a year as visiting scholar at New York University in 2011. In 2012, she returned to Göttingen, where she completed her post-doctoral degree (habilitation) in 2015. In winter semester 2019/2020, she came to Ruhr University Bochum.
The philosopher researches primarily into two issues: “Lifetimes. How can human life in time be accomplished?” is one of them. It deals with the question in what way our wellbeing and our ability to discern meaning and morality are affected by a normal or an impaired sense of time. Her other topic is “Ethics of (Emotional) Artificial Intelligence”. Here, the philosopher collaborates with the Digital Society Initiative at the University of Zurich and the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society in Berlin. One of her questions is: To what extent can emotional relationships with AI systems be appropriate?
