Our world faces severe challenges regarding freshwater, resources and energy provision, waste disposal, transport, and adjustments to changes in climate. Geosciences take a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to exploring the subsurface and engineering it to meet mankind’s needs.
We are hosted by the Institute for Geology, Mineralogy, and Geophysics in the Faculty of Geosciences. We offer potential PhD candidates an interdisciplinary research environment. The potential candidates will get access to the resources in our institute and the shared facilities of RUB’s Research Department “Subsurface Modeling and Engineering”. The research areas are diverse, from applied to fundamental problems of examining and understanding how the planet Earth works.
The potential PhD candidates will not only interact with peers and colleagues at RUB but also network with academics from other institutes in the Ruhr area, such as the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Systems IEG, and industrial partners. The PhD candidates will benefit from the collaborative research framework of RUB, the University of Duisburg-Essen and TU Dortmund University, for example, by being granted access to the courses at these three universities.
