Research Profile Physics and Astronomy

Do you want to understand “What holds the world together at its core” as Goethe’s Faust put it? Physics as a fundamental science aims at answering that question and understanding nature as a whole. Therefore, our research at RUB spans every level from fundamental matter to materials and their applications for modern civilization. We cover the smallest scales of elementary particles and the largest scales of the evolution of the Universe, the smallest time scales up to the eternity of the cosmos.

The exploration of physical matter – be it elementary particles, nuclei, correlated electrons, plasmas, the interstellar medium, dark matter or galaxies – leads to an understanding that becomes visible in the materials of everyday life. These materials are the basis for applications and form the starting point for engineering sciences who exploit physical effects to make them useful for society. The connection between physical insight into matter and the materials sciences is a unique strength of the Physics and Astronomy Department in Bochum and of interdisciplinary research at Ruhr-Universität as a whole. The physics program at RUB is characterized by the connection of cutting-edge research with practical problems. Theorists and experimentalists work hand in hand.

State-of-the-art laboratories

We are right at the forefront of research with the strongest research of all physics faculties in the state North Rhine-Westphalia. We have state-of-the-art laboratories on campus, including a radionuclide laboratory, particle accelerator, scanning tunneling microscopes, plasma generators and special high-capacity lasers, and we have access to supercomputers, telescopes and particle accelerators all over the world, thereby providing ideal conditions for efficient and research-oriented studies. Moreover, research is conducted in cooperation with national research institutions like the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), the Deutsches Elektronensynchrotron (DESY) or the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and international centers such as CERN, allowing our students to build up a strong network during their studies. Furthermore, RUB is part of the University Alliance Ruhr, which offers close collaboration with researchers at the neighboring universities, TU Dortmund and University of Duisburg-Essen.

RUB Research School

The PhD candidates will be part of the cross-faculty RUB Research School, which offers an extensive soft skill training to optimize all forms of communication and professional behavior. The Research School supports early-career scientists on their path into responsible positions in science, business and society and provides a common platform for discussion of early-career researchers’ issues at RUB.

If you are curious as to how the brain builds memories, or modifies and forgets them; if you would like to know how the brain changes during aging, dementia, psychosis or in disease states related to immune, genetic or metabolic disorders, then RUB is the perfect place for you to conduct your PhD project.

At RUB, materials researchers with diverse disciplines and expertise join forces to develop new materials and study the relationships between processing, structure and properties of advanced materials.
