SFB/TR 110
This Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio focuses on the strong interaction between particles.
The so-called Standard Model of particle physics describes all known elementary particles and three of the four known fundamental forces of nature: the strong, the electromagnetic, and the weak interactions. Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 110 conducts theoretical studies of strong forces, which are responsible for the existence and properties of protons and neutrons. They generate almost the entire mass of visible matter in the universe and are made up of elementary particles: quarks and gluons. Even though the theory of strong interactions between quarks and gluons has been known for some time, the formation of atomic nuclei has not yet been understood in detail. In particular, researchers in this SFB analyse which role the symmetries of the underlying theory play in the formation of such structures.
Host university is the University of Bonn. In addition to Ruhr University Bochum, co-applicants include Technical University of Munich and Peking University. Moreover, the research centre Forschungszentrum Jülich as well as the Institute of High Energy Physics und the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences are involved in the Collaborative Research Centre, which has been funded since 2012.
