Grantee Professor Serim İlday

Serim İlday heads the “Simply Complex Lab” division at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Ruhr University Bochum. Her ERC Grant startet in 2019.

Serim İlday attained her PhD from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, in 2014, and subsequently undertook postdoctoral studies at Bilkent University, Ankara, where she has held a professorship since 2017. She has garnered various awards and accolades, including the 2018 L’Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science (FWIS) Award, the 2019 European Research Council Starting Grant, and the 2022 Turkish Physical Society “International Special Honor” Award – an honor typically bestowed upon esteemed senior scientists, making her the youngest awardee. In 2020, she was inducted as a Fellow of the Young Academy of Europe (YAE) and elected to its board. That same year, she was named an “Emerging Leader” in condensed matter physics by the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter's editorial board. Her work has gained substantial recognition within the scientific community and the media, featuring prominently in popular science literature, receiving journal highlights, and garnering acknowledgement from notable researchers across various disciplines.

Since January 2023, Professor Serim İlday has assumed leadership of the “Simply Complex Lab” division at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Ruhr University Bochum.
