From Liquids to Soft Matter

In the life sciences, water is the ubiquitous solvent, sometimes even referred to as the "matrix of life"; understanding its function is crucial for the comprehensive decoding of important biological functions.

Understanding "solvation" will also drive significant advances in new key technologies such as green chemistry and electrochemistry. It is essential for optimizing industrial processes, avoiding environmental hazards, preventing corrosion or increasing energy efficiency, to name just a few important societal challenges. The Cluster of Excellence RESOLV (Ruhr Explores Solvation) has established a new research discipline in chemistry with its focus on the solvent and finds an ecosystem of highly relevant research in the research building Center for Molecular Spectroscopy and Simulation of Solvent-Controlled Processes (ZEMOS) and in the Research Center Chemical Sciences and Sustainability of the UA Ruhr.

Cluster of Excellence

Blau leuchtende Petrischale

The Cluster of Excellence RESOLV is an interdisciplinary research project of the Ruhr University Bochum and the TU Dortmund University, as well as four other institutions in the German Ruhr area.

Research building

Gebäude ZEMOS

Researchers at the Center of Molecular Spectroscopy and Simulation of Solvent-Driven Processes study the solvation of chemical substances in detail.

ERC Grants

Clara Saraceno will use her ERC Consolidator Grant to develop new methods for adjusting air plasma composition using ultrafast lasers. This revolutionizes light generation, but also other areas.

The aim of the “Mechanochem” project is to better understand chemical reactions without solvents and without heating and to set new standards in research.

Carbanions are highly reactive reagents. However, they can be stabilised by smart molecular design to open up new areas of application.

Kristina Tschulik’s team studies individual nanoparticles in order to use them as a model for optimized catalysts.

Solvents make up a large percentage of the waste generated by the chemical industry. Lars Borchardt can do without them altogether.

New sources of terahertz radiation should deliver previously unimagined insights into areas such as the behavior of water.

New catalysts will help to convert carbon dioxide or nitrogen oxides into useful or harmless substances.

The Cluster of Excellence RESOLV specialises in analyzing fundamental biological reactions in aqueous solutions.

DFG Research Training Group

The Research Training Group GRK 2376 investigates how the nature of a confining environment such as geometry, surface texture and surface chemistry affect the transition states and pathways of chemical reactions.
