Building ZEMOS

Centre for Molecular Spectroscopy and Simulation of Solvent-Mediated Processes (ZEMOS)

Researchers at the Center of Molecular Spectroscopy and Simulation of Solvent-Driven Processes study the solvation of chemical substances in detail.

With modern office and lab facilities, ZEMOS offers around 100 researchers space to work in an interdisciplinary manner on new technologies relating to solvation science. ZEMOS allows Ruhr University Bochum to expand this important research focus. The federal government and the state of NRW each provide half of the funding for ZEMOS, totaling around 44 million euros. The research building was opened in 2016.

Good to Know

Research buildings are designed to improve the infrastructural conditions at higher education institutions in Germany. These institutions can thus boost their ranking on the national and international level. Eligible for funding are buildings at higher-education institutions with investment costs in excess 5 million euros the infrastructure of which is primarily used for research purposes.

The funds are disbursed by the Federal Government and the federal states in equal shares. Competing with other institutions for the establishment of such research infrastructure of national significance, Ruhr University Bochum has acquired funds amounting to approximately 250 million euros to date.
