Communicator Award

The biopsychologist Professor Onur Güntürkün has received the Communicator Award of the German Research Foundation and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft in 2014.

According to the jury's assessment, Onur Güntürkün combines high academic quality with particularly being committed to the communication with the public and the media. Born in Izmir in 1958, Güntürkün has been Professor of Biopsychology in Bochum since 1997 after studying psychology and obtaining his doctorate in Bochum, research stays in Paris and San Diego and his habilitation in Konstanz. His research combines psychological, biological and neuroanatomical questions, concepts and findings and has made him one of the pioneers of a biologically based psychology.

The Communicator Award is endowed with 50,000 euros and is considered the most important award of its kind in Germany. Since 2000, the prize has been awarded to scientists who bring their research results and those of their discipline to the attention of a broad audience outside of academia. With this award, the German Research Foundation and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft aim to strengthen the dialogue between science and the public.
