400 million plants are preserved in herbaria worldwide. As part of his ERC grant, Professor Jan Baedke is interested in the creators of these collections. He also investigates the problems that are associated with the collections’ current digitization.

Grantee Professor Jan Baedke
Jan Baedke is Professor for History and Philosophy of Science at Ruhr University Bochum.
Jan Baedke studied in Bochum from 2003 to 2010. In 2014, he completed his doctoral thesis at Ruhr University Bochum on philosophical problems of epigenetics, i.e. inheritance processes that are not directly attributable to genes. This was followed by various research stays at the City University of New York, the National Autonomous University of Mexico City, the University of Exeter, the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research in Vienna and the University of Cambridge. Jan Baedke was a research associate at the Institute of Special Zoology and Evolutionary Biology (Ernst-Haeckel-Haus) at Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2019. He then returned to Ruhr University Bochum as a junior professor and obtained an Emmy Noether group funding from the German Research Foundation. Since December 2025, Baedke has held the professorship for History and Philosophy of Science in Bochum.
