Publishing

With a publication guideline, an Open Access Fund and the university bibliography, Ruhr University Bochum supports its researchers in publishing their results and in compiling publication lists.

Open Access

By signing the 2003 Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, Ruhr University Bochum supports the demands for free, unrestricted access to online research outputs. In March 2013, the rectorate of Ruhr University approved an official policy in support of Open Access.

Publication Fund

In 2014, a publication fund supported by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – DFG) has been established at Ruhr University to help pay for the publication fees in open-access journals.

Publication Guidelines

The Publication Guidelines specify that Ruhr University Bochum researchers:

  • use the standardised term of affiliation throughout the entire publication process. In German, the correct term is “Ruhr-Universität Bochum”, in English “Ruhr University Bochum”. Providing the correct affiliation is crucial to ensure that publications are assigned correctly to their respective authors and recorded completely.
  • register with ORCID (see below) and use the respective identifier in their academic work, especially in publications.
  • submit their publications to the Campus Research Bibliography (see below)

These measures are conducive to rendering the academics’ own research and consequently Ruhr University’s overall research achievements visible.

ORCID

The Open Contributor and Researcher ID is an internationally recognized personal identifier for academic and scientific contributors that links them to their research. Ruhr University has been a member of ORCID since 2016. The Publication Guidelines require Ruhr University researchers to use ORCID.

Thanks to ORCID, research can be correctly assigned to individuals, thus rendering them visible and searchable. This, in turn, facilitates communication, for example with publishers and funding bodies. ORCID is valid worldwide, has a lifelong validity and can be individually adapted.

Campus Research Bibliography and Publication List Services

The Campus Research Bibliography records all publications of Ruhr University Bochum researchers that were published during (optionally also prior to and after) the researchers’ employment at Ruhr University. If an individual’s ORCID profile is linked to the Campus Research Bibliography, the publication data between the Campus Research Bibliography and ORCID are automatically synchronised. Ruhr University researchers whose entire publication portfolio is recorded in the Campus Research Bibliography have the option to generate a complete list of publications and embed it on their own websites. New publications of which the Campus Research Bibliography has been notified subsequently appear automatically on the respective website.
