Research Centre for the Engineering of Smart Product Service Systems (ZESS)

The Research Centre for the Engineering of Smart Product Service Systems is being established on the Mark 51°7 site in Bochum. The research building is the first anchor point for knowledge-intensive companies and non-university research institutions in this quarter.

Ruhr University Bochum is thus implementing its three-polar site development strategy – campus, city centre, and Mark 51°7. Academics will conduct research into Industry 4.0 at ZESS. The federal government and the state of NRW will each provide half of the funding for the centre, totaling around 28 million euros. The building was completed in October 2021.

Good to Know

Research buildings are designed to improve the infrastructural conditions at higher education institutions in Germany. These institutions can thus boost their ranking on the national and international level. Eligible for funding are buildings at higher-education institutions with investment costs in excess 5 million euros the infrastructure of which is primarily used for research purposes.

The funds are disbursed by the Federal Government and the federal states in equal shares. Competing with other institutions for the establishment of such research infrastructure of national significance, Ruhr University Bochum has acquired funds amounting to approximately 250 million euros to date.
