Grantee Professor F. Ömer İlday

F. Ömer İlday came to Bochum in 2023 with an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship.

The scientist F. Ömer İlday received his doctorate from Cornell University, Ithaca, USA, in 2003, worked as a postdoc from 2003 and as a Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, from 2005. In 2006, he moved to Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, as a Professor of Physics. From 2014 to 2023, he has been a Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering.

F. Ömer İlday is an elected member of the Academia Europaea and the Turkish Academy of Sciences, as well as other professional academies such as the Turkish and the American Physical Society, and Optica. He has received numerous awards, including the Engin Arık Science Award from the Turkish Physical Society, the Science Award of TÜBİTAK, the top award in science in Turkey, and the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Professorship in 2023, which brought him to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Ruhr University Bochum.

His ERC project is about developing a new laser concept to generate ultrashort pulses at extremely high repetition rates.
