Johann Büssow

Grantee Professor Johann Büssow

Professor Johann Büssow is Professor at the Faculty of Philology.

Johann Büssow read Islamic Studies, Political Science and Jewish Studies in Berlin, Bonn and Cologne between 1996 and 2002 and spent one semester as a DAAD scholarship holder at Cairo University, Egypt during his studies. Between 2008 and 2012, he headed the working group “Power and Domination” in the Collaborative Research Centre 586 “Difference and Integration” of the German Research Foundation, which was based at the Universities of Leipzig and Halle-Wittenberg. In 2011, he completed his dissertation at the Free University of Berlin. From 2012 to 2013, he conducted research at the Max Weber Foundation’s "Orient-Institut Beirut", Lebanon. From 2013 to 2018, he was Professor of Islamic History and Culture at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen. Since 2018, he has been Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at Ruhr University Bochum.

His ERC project starts in 2022.

Social Strategies in the Eastern Mediterranean Region in the Age of Empires

The project explores the social and cultural dynamics in the Palestine region between 1880 and 1920, analyzing largely untapped data.
